ENDURING CONNECTIONS

We’re a family-owned New Zealand company with a deep connection to timber — one that’s grown across three generations. From our beginnings in sawmilling to becoming a trusted partner to architects and designers, we’ve stayed true to one purpose: creating refined timber surfaces that bring the best of nature to life.

A Legacy of Craft

Our story began with a passion for timber and a belief that craftsmanship should endure. From our early days in sawmilling to becoming a leader in engineered timber surfaces, we’ve remained true to one principle — to create with care, and for the long term.

We continue to build on that legacy today, combining advanced manufacturing with timeless design sensibilities to produce surfaces that perform beautifully and last for generations.

Innovation with Integrity

Innovation drives us forward, but integrity keeps us grounded. We take pride in owning and managing our supply chain, partnering with leading manufacturers and finishers to ensure every Forté product meets the highest standards of durability, sustainability and design excellence.

Our collections are the result of collaboration, research and refinement — born from a desire to make timber more capable, more beautiful and more sustainable than ever before.

Designed for the Way We Live

Forté surfaces are designed in New Zealand and crafted for the way we live today — balancing performance, low maintenance and timeless aesthetic appeal. From homes to hospitality, and from aged care to architectural showpieces, our products are made to meet the demands of real life without compromise.

Each piece of timber we create tells a story — of care, of craftsmanship, and of our commitment to helping others realise their vision with confidence.

1985

Foundations in Timber

Our story begins in rural New Zealand, where James Piesse founded Heritage Design, crafting bespoke kauri furniture and joinery. What began as a small workshop built on passion and precision became the foundation of a lifelong connection to timber.

1990

Heritage Timbers is Established

James and his father Kelvin founded Heritage Timbers, supplying native species to builders and craftspeople across New Zealand. Together, they built a business grounded in integrity, quality and care.

2001

The Pukekohe Mill

A purpose-built sawmill opened in Pukekohe, enabling the family to mill and process native timbers locally. It marked a new era of capability, scale and technical expertise.

2007

A Turning Point

As native logging restrictions reshaped the industry, the family faced a pivotal change. Instead of stepping back, they looked forward — exploring new materials and forging international partnerships that would define the future of their business.

2009

A New Direction

The family began specialising in engineered timber flooring — a modern solution that combined natural beauty with advanced performance. This innovation laid the groundwork for what would soon become Forté.

2014

Forté is Founded

Forté was established as a new brand dedicated to refined timber surfaces. Combining generations of craftsmanship with a forward-looking vision, Forté quickly became New Zealand’s trusted name in premium timber flooring and panelling.

2016

Auckland Showroom Opens

Forté opened its first showroom in Auckland — a pivotal step toward what would later evolve into the Forté Experience Centre. The space invited designers, builders and homeowners to explore collections firsthand, paving the way for today’s immersive design environments.

2018

Expanding Horizons

Forté opened its Queenstown Showroom, extending its reach into the South Island — and introduced premium exterior decking, bringing Forté craftsmanship outdoors for the first time.

2022

Toitū CarbonReduce Certification

Forté achieved Toitū CarbonReduce certification, measuring and reducing its operational emissions as part of a long-term commitment to sustainability and responsible design.

2023

Christchurch Showroom Opens

Forté opened its Christchurch Showroom, expanding its South Island presence and creating a hub for designers and builders across the region. The space has since evolved into a full Forté Experience Centre — a place for collaboration, inspiration and material discovery.

2024

Expanding the Forté Range

Forté introduced a range of exterior cladding systems, completing the connection between indoor and outdoor timber applications, and marking a new era of whole-building surface solutions.

2024

Across the Tasman

Forté expanded into Australia, bringing its philosophy of refined timber surfaces and enduring care to a new generation of architects, designers and builders.

2025

Veneer Panels Introduced

Forté extends its portfolio once again with the introduction of premium veneer panels — enabling design continuity across cabinetry, walls and furniture, and uniting the full interior surface experience.

Today

Shaping the Future of Timber

Guided by integrity, innovation and a deep respect for nature, Forté continues to redefine what timber can achieve in modern architecture. Each surface carries forward our legacy of craftsmanship and care — connecting people, material and design for generations to come.

We believe refinement lies in the harmony between beauty and performance. Every collection we create is designed to elevate the way timber is experienced — combining natural warmth with enduring quality and technical precision.
